I have had a passion to write for many years, but never seemed to find time except for writing business letters, newspaper ads, articles, and announcements. I enjoyed journaling occasionally. I lost most of what I had written, but the effort probably helped to create my style and my voice in writing.
Eventually, I answered an ad asking: Do You Want to Become a Children’s Writer? I responded to the ad and started taking classes given by Institute of Children’s Literature.
In one of my assignments I wrote a short story that later became the first chapter in my book, “Wake-Up Calls.”
They say, “Write what you know.” I know the flower business. I was a co-owner of flower shops and greenhouses for many years, so I decided to have my protagonist, Krista, work in a flower shop as a part time employee. The story developed along with its characters, and I felt compelled to continue with it. It developed legs of its own.
I’m drawn to write for young adults because I worry about how easily they can be influenced.
By writing this book, and the ones to follow, I hope to encourage a young person to think beyond the moment….and also I want to hook them into reading.
I want to encourage my reader to observe, listen, and not be afraid to ask questions. Develop self-confidence and like who you are.
